The station is built out of Evergreen© styrene. I built it in two layers: the interior layer is black styrene and was cut across the whole surface for the openings to give clean cuts, while the exterior layer had the openings marked in from the black layer and carefully cut out from there. The openings were then carefully filed to match the interior and both layers were glued together.
The board and batten material from Evergreen© is, to my eye, too coarse with the battens too infrequent and too large, therefore I built my own battens. I used a sliding board to draw evenly spaced parallel lines on the sides and then glued appropriate strip styrene in place. I’m pleased with the results.
The detail of each wall was built up separately before all being put together. In the process, I rejected a couple of walls because either they became overscaled or the angles were incorrect. I made these pieces over again. The dog also got a hold of one wall, which had to be completely rebuilt.
The windows are mainly Grandt© line though some are Tichy© train. The Grandt windows are somewhat undersized but not noticeably, and I believe that the overall effect looks balanced.
The roof is probably Kirbi©. Again, there were several difficulties in getting this right, especially with the dormers and with the joint from the goods wing to the main station. This required scrapping several attempts and starting over again. The capping is just a strip of roofing cut off and thinned. I’m not entirely happy with this and will have to try something different next time. The chimney is a casting, probably from Sylvan©. The gutters are half circle Evergreen© with a strip of styrene glued to the inside for attaching to the roof. The drainpipes are rod styrene that was heated under hot water and then bent to shape.
I have been told that the loading docks were tarred, so I'm going to have to repaint them.
